About the Holy Thorn

The Holy Thorn tree is associated with the legend of Joseph of Arimathea, the uncle of Jesus. On arriving in Glastonbury, after the crucifixion, Joseph was said to have planted his staff in the ground of Wearyall Hill where it miraculously took root and blossomed. This tree (Crataegus Monogyna) is not native to Britain but grows in the Middle East. Its biennial flowering with white blossoms and red berries at Christmas time and Easter is a source of wonder to many.
